Welsh Love SpoonsIf you're looking for a really special Valentines Day, Wedding Day or Anniversary present, handmade Welsh Love Spoons, tokens of love, affection and romance, must be one of the loveliest traditional crafts in the world. Given by men in courtship as far back as the 16th century, or earlier, Welsh Love Spoons are made from a single piece of wood, to indicate the hard work and skill of the carver.
Spoons themselves were a symbol of the ability to provide, and there were lots of other symbols incorporated into the design to show the suitor's intentions and understanding of the requirements for marriage. Some of the most classic symbols are shown in the next image.
If you want to, you can make your own Virtual Love Spoon right here just for fun, which you can email to your friends and family! I've had a few goes of it myself!
The Welsh Love spoon Gallery at Mumbles, South Wales, is a well loved tourist attraction and the only one of it's kind dedicated to Welsh Love spoons, housing the largest collection of them in the world, all made by Wales' best carvers.
But you don't need to go! You can buy from them online right here. Each Love Spoon comes with a Story Card explaining the history and symbols.
St. Dwynwen's Day.Today, the 25th of January, is St. Dwynwen's Day! Celebrated in Wales, it is like the Welsh version of St. Valentines Day. You can see the lovely story of Welsh heroine St. Dwynwen here!
A Safe Place.
Welsh Love Spoons were and are, like a love letter or card. Words and languages are just strings of symbols that people have agreed and learned mean specific things. And lot of countries and cultures have some words which explain a concept central to how that culture thinks and feels. The most well known Welsh word like that is 'cwtch'. The English pronunciation being 'cutch'.
Cwtch has two meanings, it can be used as a noun or a verb. A cwtch is an especially loving hug or cuddle, given either by a love, parent, or even a close friend. You could say that a couple were 'cwtching up' or 'cwtched up' by the fire.
But it can also mean a cubby hole, a place to put or stash things, like a 'coal cwtch' or 'the dog's cwtch', the place where the dog stays. So the lovely combined meaning of 'cwtch' is 'a safe place'.
I live in Pembrokeshire, Wales, United Kingdom, the most beautiful place in the world. But I was born in England. I came here a few years ago, when my life had gone to shirt (well, to shit then. There was no shirt involved), which I know happens to everyone sometimes. It's been quite hard since then too. But you know for yourself when you see God and hear God, and it's also been really amazing, and one of the best things I ever did! So I love Wales very much, and this is my love letter!
You can buy a Welsh Love Spoon to say I love you to someone special, for your Valentine, for your home, for a Christmas or Mothers Day present, for a new baby, or for a couple, on their special day, here.
Thank you! and "Diwrnod Santes Dwynwen Hapus!" (Hippy St. Dwynwen's Day!)
